Former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub spoke out on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast and discussed UFC 257 with Rogan. Schaub who is a good friend of the UFC commentator had plenty to say about the headlining main event fight. Conor McGregor suffered his first TKO loss in MMA against Dustin Poirier, who came in as the underdog.
‘The Diamond’ clinched the critical finish off the back of heavy leg kicks that virtually immobilized McGregor. The Irishman was unable to execute the necessary movement and eventually crumbled against the cage and onto the canvas. Chiefly, Schaub revealed an interesting series of events that unfolded backstage following Dustin Poirier’s emphatic win.
Brendan Schaub pulls back the curtain on recent Dustin Poirier interaction
While casually conversing with Joe Rogan, Brendan Schaub revealed a time when he paid a price for betting against ‘The Diamond’. The incident took place prior to UFC 257 and following his big win, Dustin was sure to let Schaub know not to bet against him. Moreover, Joe Rogan explained how fighters are sensitive about their craft and don’t like to be counted out against anyone.
On the JRE, he said, “He [Dustin Poirier] texts me after the fight because me and Theo [Von], you know Theo’s a big Dustin Poirier fan because they’re both from Louisiana. Obviously, I’m a Conor di*k rider and I love Dustin, I’m way closer to Dustin but just for the show it’s fun to bet and so I bet Theo a thousand dollars cash.”
“As soon as Dustin…as soon as he got backstage and got to his phone, he texts me, pay Theo his money. I was like ‘You know it’s all love, man’. Yeah, they get mad and take it personal, and that’s how they should be.
While the incident cost Schaub $1000, it makes for an interesting insight into Dustin Poirier’s mindset. ‘The Diamond’ has never been one to shy away from anyone on the roster, no matter who they may be.
He’s been counted out on many occasions in his career and continues to showcase a will to win. He’ll likely be next in line for gold after his statement win and could potentially take on Charles Oliveira.
